My thoughts on Slackware, life and everything

Rainy weekend update

Last week was another busy working week at the office, but I still managed to update some of my packages.I also prepared sources and scripts for the just-released KDE 4.11-beta but I am not going to build those packages yet. I will probably wait for the first release candidate. There are almost 30 new packages due to the splitting of the bigger source tarballs for  kdeadmin, kdenetwork, kdesdk and kdetoys into smaller sub-packages. That meant, writing almost 30 new slack-desc files and updating the module definitions. If anyone is interested enough to want to compile this him- or herself, let me know and I will upload the sources to my ktown repository.

Speaking of repositories, you surely noticed that my packages for the various Slackware releases and architectures are all organized by program name, not by Slackware release/architecture. This makes it difficult for some repository search engines (like http://www.slackabduction.com/sse/, http://slakfinder.org/, http://slackfind.net/en/) to add my repositories to their database. Some time ago I created two “shadow” repositories to overcome their problems. In http://taper.alienbase.nl/mirrors/people/alien/sbrepos/ (mirrored from the master repo on slackware.com) and http://taper.alienbase.nl/mirrors/people/alien/restricted_sbrepos/ I have re-organized all packages by Slackware release and architecture. These two shadow repositories are using hard links to the original repositories so that they almost do not take up any additional space in the filesystem if you download them with a tool which can preserve hard-links (like rsync’s “-H” option). I hope these repository search engines will start using the shadow repository information. For instance, all packages I have for Slackware64 14.0 can be found under http://taper.alienbase.nl/mirrors/people/alien/sbrepos/14.0/x86_64/

What package updates came out of the hat this week?

Flashplayer-plugin

Another Adobe security bulletin apsb13-16, mentions a vulnerability CVE-2013-3343 in the Flashplayer plugin for webbrowsers. I built new packages for the version 11.2.202.291 which closes the hole.

Ffmpeg

I updated my packages to version 1.2. Actually I had built these packages a while ago but had forgotten to upload them to my repository.

Calibre and python-lxml

The newest release of Calibre, the e-book management and library software, is able to read and convert Microsoft DOCX files. In order to achieve that, it needs a version of the Python lxml library which I did not use yet. I discovered this by accident (because the Calibre site does not mention the correct version as minimum version dependency). You will need the version 3.2.1 of the python-lxml package. I also updated the internally used version of lxml in my Slackware 13.37 package (you may recall that the Slackware 13.37 package has Qt4, Python 3.7.5 and a lot of supporting libraries compiled into the package because Slackware’s versions are too old).

Qbittorrent and libtorrent-rasterbar

There was a new release of the qbittorrent software a few months ago which I had not yet packaged. Qbittorrent is my favourite Bittorrent software and an update was long overdue. The libtorrent-rasterbar library on which qbittorrent depends, was updated as well.

Have fun! Eric

Back from holiday

I enjoyed two weeks of camping with my family, in Brittany (France).

If you want to know what the view looked like…

From Photostream

Of course there was a lot more to see. We hunt old ruins with our camera! Brittany is full of chapels, monasteries, and the boulders everyone knows from places like Carnac.

When I got back home, the first packages I needed to push out were VLC because 1.1.11 plugs two vulnerabilities, and the new beta of flashplayer 11 because finally Adobe seems to have merged the development of the 64-bit version with the “mainline” 32-bit plugin. They are both essentially the same version now, 11 beta 1 (build date 071311?). The plugin itself reports that it has version 11.0.1.60.

Get the packages for vlc and flashplayer-plugin at the usual location: http://slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/ (the version of vlc without the patent restrictions that can encode mp3 and aac (instead of just being able to decode these formats) to be found as usual at http://taper.alienbase.nl/mirrors/people/alien/restricted_slackbuilds/vlc/)

More packages to come, but that needs more preparation before I can start. I need to build a patched KDE 4.6.5 package for kdeutils, and all of the KDEI source tarballs seem to have been re-generated by the KDE release team while I was on holiday.

Have fun! Eric

New libreoffice and flashplayer packages

New packages I think you will like:

I updated my SlackBuild script for LibreOffice, the successor if you want of the OpenOffice suite of applications. The updated script will download all the required source tarballs for you, so that you can separate the download and compilation process (and create packages without having to be on-line). Not having to wait for a source check-out from the on-line git repositories saves alot of time when you are rebuilding the software.

I also made some modifications that were requested through feedback on my original article about LibreOffice. The compiler flags no longer contain “-O2” which should make the resulting binaries compatible with 3rd party OpenOffice extensions. There is no longer a separate “en_US” language pack… it should not have been split off from the main package in the first place. I also added a few more language packs – if you still miss yours, let me know so I can add that too!

And I created symbolic links to allow “related languages” to use the auto-correction feature of the included languages. For instance, if you live in Belgium and your Slackware is using the “nl_BE” locale, LibreOffice will now be using the “nl_NL” autocorrection.

Get the packages and scripts at http://slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/libreoffice/(mirrors: http://taper.alienbase.nl/mirrors/people/alien/slackbuilds/libreoffice/ or http://slackware.org.uk/people/alien/slackbuilds/libreoffice/).

Adobe released a new preview of their Flash Player plugin. Again, both 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Linux are catered for.

All I needed to do was wrap the plugin library into a nice Slackware package. After installation, it is available to all mozilla-type browsers on your system. Get the packages plus scripts here: http://slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/flashplayer-plugin/

Enjoy! Eric

New adobe flash player for Linux

Yesterday, Adobe Labs released their “Preview 1” of a new flashplayer browser plugin they have been developing. As you may know, the previous test version of a Linux version of their plugin was withdrawn because it was riddled with security holes, performance issues and suffered from a bad codebase.

The newly developed code seems to be cross-platform since there are preview releases of this Flash Player ‘Square’ to be downloaded for Windows and Mac OS as well.

See http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/ for the announcement and downloadables.

So far, I am pleased with the performance and feature-set of this new plugin. Other people report that this plugin finally supports Hulu, which is a US-only video broadcast service so I can not test it from here.

I have created Slackware packages for the new flashplayer (32-bit as well as 64-bit), you can grab those at http://slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/flashplayer-plugin/ . These pacakges install the plugin into the generic mozilla plugins directory so that all mozilla-based browsers will be able to use it.
