Slackware-current – new multilib gcc compiler suite

The latest update to Slackware-current brought us a new kernel (3.14.5) and a new gcc compiler (4.8.3).

This warranted a build of new multilib gcc packages. Get them from your nearest mirror. I also refreshed the “compat32” layer of packages – this is the set of converted 32-bit Slackware packages which you’ll need at a minimum, so that you will be able to run most of the 32-bit software that is out there.

Remember, a multilib configuration is needed if you want to use binary-only 32-bit software on 64-bit Slackware – think of Valve’s Steam Client, the WINE emulator, the Pipelight browser plugin, Citrix client etc.

I rebuilt the gcc-4.8.0 multilib packages

In Slackware-current there was an update (or rather a rebuild) of the gcc 4.8.0 compiler suite, which re-adds several header files that seem to have accidentally dropped out of the installation.I have applied the same changes to the gcc packages in my multilib repository. The rebuiltgcc-4.8.0_multilib packages can be downloaded from any of these locations (mirror servers may need to catch up still):

Multilib update for slackware-current: gcc-4.8.0

There were updates to kernel, gcc and lots of other stuff yesterday in our Slackware development tree. See the Slackware-current ChangeLog.txt for all the details. It seems that Patrick is getting into the habit of telling a lot more about the decision process around the development than he used to. It is nice to read that information, I am sure you all agree to that.

The update of the gcc packages needs to be followed by a similar update in my multilib repository. The new gcc-4.8.0_multilib packages have been available since yesterday, but I did not have an opportunity to blog about that. Downloads are available from places like:

New multilib packages for 64-bit Slackware-current

As you may have noticed already, there are interesting updates in the Slackware ChangeLog.txt !

A new kernel, and new glibc plus gcc packages means there has to be an updated set of multilib packages too or else you bunch of hybrid lovers would be left out in the cold.

Well actually there is an update to my multilib packages too! . The http://slackware.com/~alien/multilib/current/ is a new directory with goodies for your consumption.

For installation/upgrade instructions see the multilib README or even better, read my Wiki article at http://alien.slackbook.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=slackware:multilib (which has not yet been updated with package versions for slackware64-current, but that will change soon).

In the slackware64-compat32 subdirectory I added the set of packages which have been generated by the massconvert32.sh script, i.e. that directory contains all the support libraries you need (along with my gcc/glibc and compat32-tools packages) to turn your Slackware64-current into a multilib system.
