KDE 4.10.5 – final increment in the 4.10 series

While there already is a second beta release of KDE 4.11, the next development cycle of the KDE Software Compilation, the team released their final increment (stability and bugfix release) of the 4.10 cycle today.

KDE SC 4.10.5 sources were made available online for the larger public – and since I have early access to the sources, I built Slackware 14 packages already. The packages are available on several mirrors, see below. Note that these are built for – and should be used only on – Slackware 14. Pat should hopefully add KDE 4.10.5 to Slackware-current soon. So if you are running our development version of Slackware, just wait for Pat and do not install my packages – they will have issues on -current.

It is still undecided what I will do with KDE 4.11 once that is ready for production. According to the Release Schedule, KDE 4.11 will be available on 14 August. It depends on what Pat will decide for the current development release of Slackware (which is going to be Slackware 14.1). If he moves to KDE 4.11 before he finalizes Slackware 14.1, then I will keep building KDE 4.11 packages for Slackware 14 in parallel for a while. But somehow I do not think he will make that jump. If you look at the previous Slackware releases, they never shipped the latest KDE but rather the final increment of an earlier KDE release. In that case, I will start building KDE 4.11 packages for Slackware 14.1. If you decide to stick with Slackware 14, you will be able to run KDE 4.10.5 which is an altogether pleasant experience.

KDE’s Dolphin File Manager

What to expect of KDE 4.10.5?

As with every incremental KDE release, this brings you “bugfixes and translation updates” and no new functionality. The over 30 recorded bugfixes include improvements to the Personal Information Management suite Kontact, the File Manager Dolphin, and others, according to the KDE 4.10.5 fix set.

Note that I upgraded kscreen (and its dependency libkscreen) which is one of the ‘extragear’ packages. Kscreen 1.0 is an important improvement in screen management for people who work with multiple monitors, TV’s and projectors, and particularly for laptop users with external monitors.

How to upgrade to KDE 4.10.5?

You will find all the installation/upgrade instructions that you need in the accompanying README file. That README also contains basic information for KDE recompilation using the provided SlackBuild script. Please note that if you are not yet running one of my KDE builds, you should upgrade from a (preferably) full installation of Slackware 14. I had some feedback from Slackware users who installed Slackware 14, excluded the whole “KDE” package series from that installation, and then installed my KDE packages on top. That way, you will be missing a lot of packages, several of them essential to the proper functioning of KDE! If you skipped the whole KDE series and install my KDE packages, you still need to get these from a Slackware 14 package tree (the essentials are highlighted in blue):

amarok
k3b
kaudiocreator
kdevelop-pg-qt
kplayer
polkit-kde-agent-1
polkit-kde-kcmodules-1

You are strongly advised to read and follow these installation/upgrade instructions!

Where to find packages?

Download locations are listed below (you will find the sources in ./source/4.10.5/ and packages in ./14.0/4.10.5/ subdirectories). Using a mirror is preferred because you get more bandwidth from a mirror and it’s friendlier to the owners of the master server!

KDE 4.10.4 – packages for Slackware 14

Packaging a new KDE Software Compilation is verging on boring – believe it or not.

The KDE developers are so unbelievably focused on quality and co-ordination that preparing packages for the new release is a matter of checking the “kde-packagers” mailing list for messages about updated dependencies, adjusting the build scripts (disabling obsolete patches, bumping version numbers) and starting the build on a fresh clean virtual machine. It usually does not take more than a single pass to build all the packages for incremental releases.

Real investigative work is usually waiting around the corner only when jumping to a new major release (re-designing KDE.SlackBuild for the new modular build, almost two years back was a good example of that).

And today’s release of KDE SC 4.10.4 is no different – the packages were built without issues soon after I got hold of the sources. Now that the sources are available for public download, I have uploaded my Slackware 14 packages to the servers.

Note that these are built for – and should be used only on – Slackware 14.

I assume it will not take long for Pat to add KDE 4.10.4 to Slackware-current. So if you are running our development version of Slackware, just wait for Pat and do not install my packages – they will have issues on -current.

KDE Software Compilation 4.10.3 for Slackware 14.

I was on holiday, so I was unable to create the Slackware packages for KDE Software Compilation 4.10.3 any sooner than today. This installment of KDE SC was already added to slackware-current earlier this week, but my packages are specifically for users of the stable release, Slackware 14.

As with every incremental KDE release, this brings you “bugfixes and translation updates” and no new functionality. There are over 75 recorded bugfixes according to the KDE 4.10.3 fix set.

How to upgrade to KDE 4.10.3?

You will find all the installation/upgrade instructions that you need in the accompanying README file. That README also contains basic information for KDE recompilation using the provided SlackBuild script. KDE 4.10.2 for Slackware 14

While I am working hard on ARM packages with the goal of being able to start X.Org on the ChromeBook, the KDE developers keep strictly to their release schedule. So I had to make some time to create Slackware packages  for the fresh KDE Software Compilation 4.10.2. Released yesterday, this iteration brings “bugfixes and translation updates” and no new functionality. If you want to know more about the fixed bugs, check out the KDE bugtracker for the KDE 4.10.2 fix set.

I expect that KDE 4.10.2 will be added to Slackware-current very soon, so after a chat with Patrick I decided to stay on the path I had started on, and bring you this KDE update as a set of Slackware 14 packages.I used the KDE.SlackBuild framework of slackware-current because Pat enhanced the script somewhat after the previous release… if you are running Slackware-current it is better that you wait for the official packages.

How to upgrade to KDE 4.10.2?

You will find all the installation/upgrade instructions that you need in the accompanying README file. New LibreOffice; and KDE recompiled for Slackware 14.0

LibreOffice 4.0.1

There is a new LibreOffice 4.0.1 release. This is a bugfix and stability improvement release, with the remark that “for enterprise adoptions, though, The Document Foundation suggests the more solid and stable LibreOffice 3.6.5, backed by certified level 3 support engineers“. I have LibreOffice 3.6.5 packages still in my repository – check out the 13.37 package directory.

Still, there are a few interesting things to mention about the 4.0.1 release:

  • LibreOffice Impress Remote (an Android app) is now available on Google Play. Instructions on how to use this are available on the LibreOffice wiki.
  • The Documentation team has released an electronic guide “Getting Started with LibreOffice 4.0?, which is available in PDF and ODF formats.

You can download the new packages from my package repository . The LibreOffice 4.0.1 packages have been built on Slackware 14.0 which makes them unfit for Slackware 13.37 (you can stick with LibreOffice 3.6.5 on that platform). Of course the new packages work with slackware-current!

Remember, you can subscribe to the repository’s RSS feed if you want to be the first to know when new packages are uploaded.

KDE 4.10.1

Now that Slackware-current has an official set of KDE 4.10.1 packages, provided by Patrick Volkerding, I have rebuilt my own KDE packages (which I had built for slackware-current at first), but this second time I did it on Slackware 14.0. Users of this stable Slackware release can now enjoy the KDE upgrade as well.

I deleted the “current/4.10.1” package directory and added the rebuilt packages in “14.0/4.10.1“. Note that if you already had my KDE 4.10.0 packages installed on Slackware 14.0 and want to upgrade to 4.10.1, there are no new/updated dependencies. One notable change compared to the previous packages is the upgrade of Calligra to 2.6.1, just like Patrick did for Slackware-current.
The README has all the instructions you will need for an upgrade.

Enjoy! Eric
