My thoughts on Slackware, life and everything

Updated multilib, chromium. Arriving soon: new libreoffice

The Chromium 72 code was released a few days ago by Google. I built new Slackware packages for Chromium 72.0.3626.81 during the weekend and they are ready for download now on slackware.com or slackware.nl, or any other mirror of course.
There’s a sizable number of CVE’s mentioned in the ChangeLog that were fixed in this release. Therefore it’s a good idea to upgrade today.
I verified that the Widevine CDM is still working, so your Netflix movie streaming is not affected by the upgrade.

Patrick updated the glibc package in slackware-current to the 2.29 release, so I could not stay behind. A new multilib version of the glibc package (also 2.29) is now available in the ‘multilib‘ package repository. I also updated all the ‘compat32’ packages to their latest Slackware versions. Update and enjoy a hassle-free Slackware environment where everything ‘just works’.

The Document Foundation released version 6.1.4 of their office suite Libre Office back on 18 December 2018. I fell ill on the 18th so I missed all the fun. I am working my way back through important software releases and now is the time to start building this version of LibreOffice for Slackware.
I need to compile four sets of packages: for Slackware 14.2 and -current, 32bits and 64bits. That means lots of compile time, so don’t expect new packages in the next few days. They will arrive in the repository eventually. Subscribe to the RSS feed of my ChangeLog if you want to know when.

Have fun! Eric

    LibreOffice 6.1.5 release scheduled to
    Week 6 , Feb 4, 2019 – Feb 10, 2019

Is it good reason to skip 6.1.4?

I’m trying to get them uploaded before monday, because I will be swamped with stuff next week and unable to work on Slackware packages…

OOPPSS ! I had a working Libroffice 61.3 on current from October 2018. I have upgraded to 61.4 but it does not wotk any more due to the new glibc !
Is there a way to ge back to the 6.1.3 packages ?

  12. alienbob

Desiderius please keep uptodate with slackware-current, otherwise this is what you get.
The older versions are no longer available if you did not keep your downloads.

    Eric —

    Slackware64 14.2 + Multilib here.

    Downloaded and ran upgradepkg on libreoffice-6.1.4-x86_64-1alien ; libreoffice-dict-en-6.1.4-x86_64-1alien ; libreoffice-kde-integration-6.1.4-x86_64-1alien ; libreoffice-sdkdoc-6.1.4-noarch-1alien

    Started from commandline.

    Clean — no errors.

    KDE [Office] works as expected.

    Thank you Eric !

LO6.1.4 running smooth and quick on updated Slackware64-current and -latest KDEPlasma5. no complaints. Wacom Tablet support is super. This is my daily driver system. I keep another slackware installation in a separate partition in case of some mishap like forgetting to run elilo… but this system works better than anything else I have used.

Hi Eric, I would like to report a bug in your latest Chromium build. Maybe it’s a known bug for it.

I use Firefox. However, I wanted to register to Instructure’s Canvas LMS and I had to do it via Chromium. So I opened Chromium, opened one tab with Canvas LMS, and they sent me a confirmation email to Gmail, so I opened a second tab for Gmail. I confirmed my registration, and after that, I wanted to close that tab. I got a confirmation window asking me if I wanted to leave some mail already composed, I clicked Yes, and then suddenly my whole desktop became unresponsive.

I only could switch to console (tty2) and I tried to log in. The whole stuff took several minutes. The login process got to the fortune phase and then I saw a message: INIT: Cannot fork, retrying.

Suddenly, kernel OOM killer got into action, and killed chromium, and after that I regained control of my system.

I had several apps opened in the desktop, and also Firefox with several tabs, but then, I have an i7 with 12 GB Ram and plenty of swap space, so this is weird.

Thanks again for all your effort and care.

” Update and enjoy a hassle-free Slackware environment where everything ‘just works’. ”

As Slackware 14.2 and your packages always have for me. Thanks, Eric!

Installed LO 6.1.4 and Chromium 72.0.3626.81. So far working like they should.

  17. Blaze

A new libreoffice-6.2.0.3-3.x86_64 does not work because LO 6.2.x requires Wayland-enabled for GTK3

  18. alienbob

Blaze, I did not even build libreoffice 6.2.0 packages so your comment is irrelevant to this blog article.
If you are having issues with the *binaries* which you downloaded from the LibreOffice website, then yes you need to define the following in your login script:

    export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk

… to get rid of the wayland related error message.

  19. Nicola

executing LO 614 with updated slackware64-current I’ve the following error message:
    bash-5.0# libreoffice
/usr/lib64/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/libfontconfig.so.1: undefined symbol: FT_Done_MM_Var

  20. alienbob

Nicola, do you have a custom-compiled older version of freetype installed perhaps?

  21. Nicola

    I’ve the -current ./l/freetype-2.9.1-x86_64-2.txz (I use slackware64-current)

  22. Mats

Do you have any plans to build LibreOffice 6.1.5?

  23. alienbob

    Hi Mats.
No. LibreOffice simply takes too much time, which I currently do not have for software I do not use.
But I might create a package for 6.2.x someday.
