My thoughts on Slackware, life and everything

LibreOffice 4.0.2 packaged for Slackware 14

LibreOffice 4.0.2

I compiled packages for the new LibreOffice 4.0.2 release.(Slackware 14 and -current).This is another “bugfix and stability improvement” release.

Get them from my package repository . If you are still running Slackware 13.37 you should stick with LibreOffice 3.6.5 for which I also have packages.

Also available from mirrors like these (remember, the mirror sites usually have a bigger bandwidth available than the master site!):

You can subscribe to the repository’s RSS feed if you want to be the first to know when new packages are uploaded.

Cheers, Eric

    Thanks!

Sigh. I upgraded LibreOffice from 3.6.4 to 4.0.2 and i noticed font rendering has gone back to ugly. I have only recently switched to the Infiniality patch http://someslack.wordpress.com/ but only using the modified freetype packages, not the qt packages. Has anyone noticed the same?

I am building LibreOffice 3.6.6 at the moment, targeting Slackware 13.37. You could give that a try as an upgrade to that 3.6.4 you were using, instead of 4.0.2.
Wait another day, and 3.6.6 will be in my repository.

Thank you for these packages Eric. Great work, as always.

@Martin: This is because the new libreoffice SlackBuild downloads a separate freetype for the build (although it’s not needed). I used a script to remove the freetype lines, rebuilt libreoffice and now it looks (and works) fine.

    Hi kabamaru,

thx for your feedback. Just to clarify, you removed the lines

    SOURCE[35]=”$SRCDIR/sources/dbf2caca1d3afd410a29217a9809d397-freetype-2.4.8.tar.bz2″
    SRCURL[35]=”http://dev-www.libreoffice.org/src/dbf2caca1d3afd410a29217a9809d397-freetype-2.4.8.tar.bz2″

and reduced all subsequent index numbers by 1 (or turned index 87 into index 35)?

@Eric: wow, the Slackbuild really is impressive. I would never have thought.

    Hello Martin,

Both should work (the order doesn’t matter, just make sure there is no index gap in the arrays). I always go with the hard way if it satisfies my OCD 🙂

If you guys think the fonts look better if I do not build a static internal freetype library into the LibreOffice package, then I will look at how to use the system freetype instead.
    Thanks for the feedback.

Eric, that would be very nice. I’d much rather use your package. Whatever you decide, _thanks_ 🙂

Those using customized freetype packages (e.g. Dugan’s, Daedra’s, or mine) will definitely notice the change. The rest of the Slackers won’t be affected in any way, which is good.

Hiya, thanks for the feedback and all. I had tried the swap number approach independently, but unfortunately both Eric’s original SlachBuild and my modified SlackBuild failed at the same line (894). Maybe I have overlooked a build dependency?
    The stdout/stderr message is:

ERROR: error 512 occurred while making /tmp/build/tmp-libreoffice/libreoffice-4.0.2.2/tail_build/prj

    and later:

    ERROR: Failure in installer.pm
ERROR: ERROR: Script setup_osl.ins not found! at /tmp/build/tmp-libreoffice/libreoffice-4.0.2.2/solenv/bin/modules/installer/setupscript.pm line 86.

The latter error is also shown in the file /tmp/LibreOffice/logging/logfile.log

If you have an idea what I might have missed that would be great. but don’t spend any time troubleshooting, I can easily wait for the next version of the package.

Thanks to Eric for all the work with this beast of a software package.

Could be all sorts of things… perhaps you ran out of disk space half-way? Or you run slackware-current and the new gcc-4.8.0 compiler does not play nice with LibreOffice?
    Impossible to guess.

thanks for the hint about disk/memory consumption which got me a bit further (but still no success).

Ty for the packages 🙂 I couldn’t get spell check to work in anything other than Spanish with the version 4 packages. I removed them and installed the 3.X packages and now spelling works in Spanish, English (British)
    Thanks

  14. Karl

Will LibreOffice eventually be part of the coming Slackware release?

  15. alienbob

    Hi Karl

I understand your question (it is asked a lot in fact) but honestly, I do not see that happening. LibreOffice is too big to be considered as an addition.
That is why I provide packages for this, and VLC and other big/non-trivial software products, in parallel to the Slackware releases so that it still is relatively easy & painless to install.

    Cheers, Eric

I’m a little late to install this, but Apache’s OpenOffice going to v4 reminded me.

Outstanding as always, Eric. Thanks so much for your work on this and so many other Slackware related things. 🙂

    Regards,

    ~Eric L.
