My thoughts on Slackware, life and everything

I now have a US mirror for Slackware Live and other goodies

Thanks to an anonymous sponsor, I am now operating a physical server in a US data center with a 1 Gbps connection to the Internet.

This server addresses a complaint of many people who are trying to download ISOs of the Slackware Live Edition. My slackware.nl aka download.liveslak.org server is hosted in a Dutch datacenter in Amsterdam, and it looks like people outside Europe, in particular downloaders in Southern Pacific region, are experiencing terribly slow speeds when fetching content from that server.

My new US server is available at two main URLs:

  • http://us.liveslak.org is the go-to location for all content related to Slackware Live Edition.
  • http://taper.alienbase.nl (don’t be confused by the “.nl” domain… I do not own a “.us” domain unfortunately) is the resurrection of my old “taper” VM which did not survive the original release of liveslak… that taper buckled under the high demand caused by massive download traffic and I decommisioned it in favor of my French datacenter server “bear” which again was replaced with “martin” in Amsterdam.
The new taper has mirrors for liveslak (exact same content as us.liveslak.org) and also all Slackware release trees and ISOs, the ‘cumulative’ package repository, Mate SlackBuild (msb) and Cinnamon SlackBuild (csb), as well as my own package and multilib repositories.

In addition to the http access, these servers are also accessible via rsync: rsync://us.liveslak.org/ and rsync://taper.alienbase.nl/.

I hope this will give you folks out there a good alternative mirror location. Let me know how you experience the download speeds.

Cheers, Eric

Yay! Thank you Mr Anonymous Sponsor and thank you Eric for setting up the new mirror!

As I’m in the central US I thought I’d try out your new US mirror. I use rsync and only mirror a few packages and your multilib. Didn’t think it would download anything since I synced with bear earlier today. However, taper downgraded chromium-ungoogled to it’s previous version:
    chromium-ungoogled-98.0.4758.80-x86_64-1alien.txz
    83,987,912 100% 2.66MB/s 0:00:30 (xfr#4, to-chk=2/7)
You can also see it averaged 2.66 MB/s for that file (I just did a speedtest.net test and it gave me 51.43 Mbps download speed (6.4 MB/s)).

Since taper went live on the 19th and chromium-ungoogled was last updated on the 19th maybe it just got extremely unlucky and didn’t sync? I would imagine taper would be updated at least every 24 hours or only when it sees new updates?

Switched back to bear just to test the download speed on chromium-ungoogled:
    chromium-ungoogled-98.0.4758.102-x86_64-1alien.txz
    84,004,456 100% 1.10MB/s 0:01:12 (xfr#4, to-chk=2/7)

So I would much rather use taper (assuming it stays reasonably up to date)!

I had forgotten to add the taper IP address to my mirror whitelist, so it has been trying to sync without success. Thanks for alerting me, I have fixed the whitelisting and the taper repository is now again in sync.

This is most likely something wrong on my end… (maybe my package tool??) but today I upgraded your multilib (and compat32) repos from your new US mirror taper.alienbase.nl .
On my system the install script was not setting up the proper links for glibc-2.35_multilib-x86_64-1alien
What I had to do on my system was unpack the package, copy all the libs from /lib64/incoming ( to /lib ) and then manually set up the links for several (note not all) of the libs. One that was glaringly missing was the link for libc.so.6 –> libc-2.35.so but there were several others.

Something is still not right after doing all this as one of my old 32-bit binaries no longer executes. I may roll everything back to 2.33 multilib packages if you find nothing wrong – but could you please double check the package install scripts?
    Thanks.

Ok I see new packages in your uk mirror with string 1fixalien. I will try these.

Ok sorry for the fire drill. Seems all is good now with your fixes.

    Hi Eric.

Reporting SlackLive download times, now from Colombia (South America).

Each download took in average 15 mins at 2.5Mb/s 5.2Mb/s. I Updated all SlackLive iso flavors.

With old mirrors I got and average speed around 2Mb (not bad), but now is much faster.

Thanks Eric for setting up a server in the US!

For slackware64-15.0 and slackware-15.0, looks like extra/ and testing/ aren’t getting mirrored properly. I switched to taper.alienbase.nl and several packages got downgraded:
