This article contains instructions on how to create a true multilib Slackware64. A multilib 64bit Linux system is capable of running 64bit as well as 32bit software. The Filesystem Hierarchy Standard dictates the best way to achieve a clean separation between 64bit and 32bit software on a single system. With Slackware64 we chose to adopt this standard, so it has been prepared to look for 64bit libraries in /lib64 and /usr/lib64 directories. This is why I call Slac…

In Slackware 12 with CUPS 1.3.7 I found setting the pdf script to save the file did not work as expected. It appears the script is run as user lp, which cannot change the owner. Rather than remove the sticky bit, I used “sudo chown” to change the owner, of course that meant the following “chmod” failed, so I had to swap the two command. I also wanted to record the titl…

CUPS (the Common UNIX Printing System) is now the default printing subsystem in Slackware, after years of faithful service by the lprng package which is no longer part of Slackware. The commandline lpr program that some of you use is in fact part of CUPS, but it emulates the old lpr program that has been known in Linux/UNIX for ages and which was the way to print if you had lprng installed in Slackware. But a set of commandline tools is n…

Hi! I am Eric Hameleers, or Alien BOB as I am called on various Slackware forums & channels.
I am a long time Slackware user, part of the Slackware team, but I am not a Slackware employee. I use these sites (http://alien.slackbook.org/ and http://www.slackware.com/~alien) to publish scripts I wrote, lots of Slackware packages, their build scripts, and several articles I wrote for my Wiki of course.

I run the commands from an X terminal, and at some point start the X based kernel configurator. I run my desktop as “myself” but I build my kernels as root. In order to let root use my X display, I do the following in my X terminal: get root rights; merge my own (alien's) Xauthority file with the one from the root user, and set the DISPLAY variable. Here's what I had to do to get the Wiki up and running. Remember that the DokuWiki has no need for a database server like MySQL. The Wiki pages, indexes and archives are stored as files below the DokuWiki root (or anyplace else if you want to separate the content from the code). This makes it ideal to install in your own home directory. You do not need any additional permissions on the webserver.
