KDE SC 4.4.2 for Slackware… including PolicyKit

KDE SC 4.4.2 (second maintenance release for the 4.4 series ) has been made available and the Slackware packages can be found at http://alien.slackbook.org/ktown/4.4.2/

You can download 32-bit as well as 64-bit packages. Many of the dependencies have been updated, some have been added. Read the README in the top-directory for full installation/upgrade instructions, or look for my older http://alien.slackbook.org/blog/its-been-released-kde-sc-4-4-0/ post.

Note that you have to be running Slackware-current (not older than 30-march-2010) or lots of things will break!

As a special gift on april 1st, I have added PolicyKit and ConsoleKit to the dependencies section. The KDE SC 4.4.2 packages have been built with support for them, which means you can now properly set your date/time in KDE, as well as install new fonts and configure your printer… thanks to the work of PiterPUNK and Robby Workman, and NaCl (from the WICD developer team) who wrote and refined the patch for polkit-1 that allowed me to add it without the need for PAM.

This upgrade is recommended if you are using my earlier 4.4.x packages.

Eric

Is it the April’s Fool joke? I doubt people will have a Slackware -current that new πŸ™‚

Sorry I forgot but thank you for this update. I’ll try it tonight when I’m back home.

That should have been “30-march-2010” πŸ˜‰ I have updated my post.

Thanks for the update. I have been wanting to try the alternative interface on my new netbook. As always, your efforts are much appreciated.
Are you planning to release any internationalisation packages?

You can use these on 32-bit Slackware as well, even though they are located below “x86_64”: http://alien.slackbook.org/ktown/4.4.2/x86_64/kdei/

thanx for this stuff, using them happily at home and at work: have to repeat myself, but I would really like to see this packages on standard current, hope “things” will settle so it happens soon πŸ™‚

Thanks for the new packages! I know this was a lot of work for you and it is much appreciated.

Now to go break something. πŸ™‚

Thanks for these great packages! KDE 4.4 looks really promising.
Did someone else also experiencing problems with akonadi? I already tried it on a clean user profile, but always get error messages “Unknown error. (Unknown resource)”, no matter which resource I want to add. One resource always get added after I login again and that throws this error message every few seconds until I remove it from akonadi. Some has the same problem?

    @klaus,

I’m not sure if it’s related but it seems that MySQL version 5.1.42 has broken the QMYSQL driver used by Akonadi.

For me, it means no contact in Kaddressbook even though they have been successfully migrated into $HOME/.local/share/contacts directory.

    Here’s the thread from LQ

    http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/akonadi-failure-after-mysql-upgrade-5-1-42-a-793778/#post3889164

Hey, Thanks for the great work πŸ™‚

  14. Ponce

Tried with a newer mysql (5.1.45), but I discovered a patch is needed to make it work with akonadi

    http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=45058
    http://lists.mysql.com/commits/101654
    http://lists.mysql.com/commits/101654?f=plain

    and that fixed it πŸ™‚

btw I got a different problem: setting date and time, printers and so on works for me only on newly created users (probably with a clean $HOME): tried to delete $HOME/.config, $HOME/.kde and $HOME/.local folders with no luck, gotta investigate further…
    any hints are welcome πŸ˜€

  15. Ponce

sorry, I forgot: FYI, I added also a –with-plugins=all to the mysql 5.1.45’s configure (looks like needed).

  16. klaus

Thanks for your comments and hint about MySQL problem. I patched MySQL and updated it and some errors are gone, but have some problems still, like I can not see contacts in my addressbook and so on. But it seems to be not a problem with these Slackware packages, so I have to research a bit more in the next days.

solved the problem for my existing user: I was using a custom .xinitrc and I missed the end of the README in your kde-4.4.2 download page:

“If you start X from the console by typing “startx”, i.e. you use runlevel 3,
and you have a custom ~/.xinitrc , open it in an editor and look if it ends
with a line that goes like:

    startkde

if there is such a line, you must change that into:

    ck-launch-session startkde”

    sorry for the noise

    Hy,
First of all, thanks for the packages Eric!

I have a question: have anybody tried to open/convert raw images?
When I try to open a raw image with krita, it says that “Cannot load library /usr/lib64/kde4/libkrita_raw_import.so: (libkdcraw.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)”
I’m using Slackware64-Current with you KDE 4.4.2 packages.

kdegraphics-4.3.5 (from -Current) contains libkdcraw.so.7.1.0, but kdegraphics-4.4.2 (your package) contains libkdcraw.so.8.0.0. So I don’t understand why it try to load libkdcraw.so.7… If i try to make a symlink “ln -s /usr/lib64/libkdcraw.so.8.0.0 /usr/lib64/libkdcraw.so.7′ than krita crashes when I try to open a raw image.

Another difference between Current and your packages is:
    – when I start krita on current from terminal it doesn’t give any messages
    – when I start krita using your KDE 4.4.2 packages it gives a lot of messages like
    “krita(2312)/kdecore (KLibrary) kde4Factory: The library “/usr/lib64/kde4/libkritapart.so” does not offer a qt_plugin_instance function.”

  20. Aprils fools?

Hmm – is the policykit part just an aprils fools, or has some real progress been made towards full-blown KDE4.4 support in Slackware ? πŸ˜‰

    Hello Eric,
All works fine for me . Just a strange problem: I use runlevel 3 and startx doesnot works with “ck launch-session startkde” in ~./xinitrc. it works with “startkde”
    Thank you so much
    Gabriel

thanks for make the polkit works in slackware. I’ve been using it (polkit and consolekit from your repo) on my slackware64-current and rebuild my GNOME that depend on it. πŸ˜€

  23. Jeffrey

    Great Work! Thank you.

  24. zbreaker

Many thanks once again for your hard work for this distro and it’s devotees:)
